Is the Undertaker's 19-0 Wrestlemania Record really a Big Deal?

Every year when Wrestlemania gets close you can count on one thing happening; it's time to talk about the Undertaker's undefeated streak. The announcers on Raw and Smackdown will tell you how amazing the streak is and what a legacy the Undertaker has because of it. But I have to ask one question, is the Undertaker's record at Wrestlemania really a big deal?

Let's start Wrestlemania at the beginning. At Wrestlemania VII the Undertaker defeated “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka. Jimmy Snuka is one of pro wrestling's all-time greats but let's face facts, Jimmy Snuka was 47 and the Undertaker was 26. Not exactly an even match-up. In 1993 at Wrestlemania IX the Undertaker would face the Giant Gonzalez, a wrestler who was 8 feet tall and could barely move, and the Undertaker was only able win because of his opponent getting himself disqualified. Fortunately in 1995 the WWE would finally start to put the Undertaker up against some real opponents. At Wrestlemania XII he would face Diesel(Kevin Nash). This was a hard fought victory that finally gave the streak some merit. At Wrestlemania XIII the Undertaker would face WWE Champion Sycho Sid, this should've been the end of the streak. But Bret Hart, who was in a feud with Sycho Sid, came out to the ring and attacked Sycho Sid enabling the Undertaker to win the match. It would be the next 5 years that would destroy all of credibility of the Undertaker's 19-0 record at Wrestlemania. There would be two big victories over tough opponents: Kane at Wrestlemania XIV(1998) and Triple H at Wrestlemania XVII(2001). However at Wrestlemania XV(1999) the Undertaker would defeat the Big Boss Man, who was out of his prime and not exactly a “main eventer” anymore. Then there was what was missing from this time period(1998-2003), no matches against Stone Cold Steve Austin or the Rock at Wrestlemania. And what about the incident of padding the Undertaker's Wrestlemania record when he faced 54 year old Ric Flair at Wrestlemania XVIII(2002).

In 2004 the WWE would finally start to give the Undertaker some real opponents. From 2004 to 2011 he faced Kane, Randy Orton, Mark Henry, Batista, Edge, Shawn Michaels(twice), and Triple H. But is it too little, too late? Think about all of the greats matches that could've happened, but didn't. No matches against Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man Randy Savage, Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Shawn Michaels(when he was in his prime), Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Rock, Bill Goldberg, or Brock Lesnar. And what about John Cena? Cena has been in the main event at Wrestlemania ever since he won his first WWE Championship at Wrestlemania XXI. So that's six Wrestlemanias without the Undertaker and John Cena facing each other in the main event. And I have to ask, what would be bigger than the "Phenom vs. the "Franchise"? So with all of these great wrestlers that the Undertaker could've faced at Wrestlemania, and didn't, you have to ask yourself a question. Is the Undertakers 19-0 Wrestlemania record really a big deal?

Update: The Undertaker's Legendary Wrestlemania streak came to an end at Wrestlemania 30 in 2014.

WWE Hell in a Cell Results: John Cena to Join the Nexus

WWE Hell in a Cell is in the books, and WWE made an attempt to shake things up in order to improve the shit ratings they've done for the past 2 weeks.  In my opinion, nothing will change as long as you have a pay per view that features the most demonic structure in WWE, yet no one bleeds.   The main 2 stories coming out of the show were John Cena losing to Wade Barrett, hence forcing him to join The Nexus.  The arena seemed legitimately shocked and upset by this, which is pretty hard to believe these days.  There were "fan" run ins during the finish, but the fans were apparently members of NXT Season 2.  Cena was near tears, and the live crowd at least seemed to buy it.  To me, it's just another story that will see Cena forced to be a Nexus member for awhile, until he finds a loophole that will allow Super Cena to return, beat them all, and go back to the same old crap.  HOPEfully this is a test run for a full fledged Cena heel turn, which is about the only thing in wrestling that could have a bit of spark left to it.

The other story saw Paul Bearer turning on The Undertaker already, and helping Kane win their Hell in a Cell match.  We've seen Paul turn on The Undertaker before, hell we've seen The Undertaker turn on Paul, so this didn't have a whole lot of punch.  Everything else was pretty standard, they push this as a violent PPV but there isn't much to it when there isn't a drop of blood.  Other action saw:

Daniel Bryan defeated the Miz and John Morrison by making the Miz tap out.

Randy Orton defeated Sheamus in the first Hell in a Cell match.

Edge beat Jack Swagger in an impromptu match.

Barrett over Cena

Natalya over Michelle McCool by DQ

and Kane over The Undertaker

Now all eyes are on RAW, for the debut (at least temporarily) of John Cena as a Nexus member.

The Undertaker vs. Edge, Hell in a Cell, Saves Summerslam

Summerslam 08 is in the books and what was once something so special that every match stuck in your head for a lifetime, came off pretty much as "just another show." Thankfully the main event gave us something special, maybe a little touch of that old school feeling where u may not have even cared about who won or lost, it was just a great match featuring the returning Undertaker taking on a totally different Edge. Yes, Edge "snapping" on Mick Foley on Smackdown may be the moment we look back and realize that Edge took the final step he needed to take to become the major player that WWE so badly needs.

Edge has always been "just OK" in my book, i just couldn't see him as a legitimate main event wrestler - I don't know why, it just never clicked. Maybe his character and mannerisms were too overdone and fake to me, but the moment Foley brought out the "real Edge," Edge brought a new character to the table - a character that said "Thanks Mick, I understand now"....then promptly kicked Foley's ass. Also a character who broke down a major barrier on Sunday at Summerslam, when he came down to the ring smiling, as if he was excited to be stepping into the Hell in a Cell and even more happy (not even intimidated ) about the presence of the Undertaker.

For years now, we've seen it's pretty much a rule that almost EVERY single wrestler that wrestles the Undertaker HAS to be scared of him, no matter how big or small, they must fear the Undertaker. Edge made me feel like I was seeing a bit of Brian Pillman in his performance tonight and also the classic performance from Friday's Smackdown, where he really came through the TV as a true psycho as he interacted with Vickie Guerrero, making her apologize to the Undertaker and more random psychotic ramblings. His new character almost makes me think it is semi based on Heath Ledger's Joker from the summers hit movie "The Dark Knight," fine by me, ANYthing to make things interesting again.

Tonight's match was a rare time when a character can lose the match, then get choke slammed through the ring, and you STILL want to see what he will do next because it's THAT interesting and it's been a LONG time since any character has had my attention in that way. The match had some big spots with Edge running across 3 tables to spear the Taker on the outside after they had broken through the cage and fought outside. Edge was choke slammed from the top rope to the outside through tables and then after Edge lost, the Undertaker came back to the ring, set up 2 ladders ,and gave Edge an awkward choke slam from the ladders and through the ring. After all this flame burst through the ring, signifying Edge had been "choke slammed to Hell." The end was a little awkward to set up, and a little over the top, but I can't complain, this match blew everything else out of the water by far, and is one of the only things I'm actually excited to see continue on Smackdown.

The rest of Summerslam was pretty much crap. Batista beat Cena clean which I was glad to see, and Jericho and Michaels had a great in ring angle that saw Jericho knock out Michaels wife; very good story there - very old school and probably the best story on RAW right now in my opinion. The title matches were in the middle of show, so yeah WWE is straight telling us that titles don't mean shit anymore and nothing else on the show is even worth mentioning. So in my eyes, the only things worth watching right now are Edge being the definite highlight on Smackdown and seeing how the Michaels/Jericho angle plays out on RAW.

It's sad that that is pretty much it, and even worse that such a boring show shamed the name "Summerslam"....thank God for the WWE Summerslam Anthology. For those of you who haven't seen the original Summerslams, I suggest buying it, to feel the electricity that was brought by the originals because I don't see it ever coming back.

WWE Armageddon: Afterthoughts

Last night, WWE Armageddon went down live from Pittsburgh, PA (where earlier in the day my Jaguars stomped all over the Steelers), and the night saw several impressive performances, and even a couple shockers.

The first match of the night would see MVP facing off against Rey Mysterio with the US title on the line. MVP would manage to squeak by, losing by way of count out, but keeping his title in the process.

Afterthought: Where do they go from here? MVP is established as a tweener, but this is his latest in many lackluster feuds. It's time to get the US strap off of him, and get him involved in something mainevent status. I think he could pull it off.

Match numero dos came to use from the ECW front, as CM Punk and Kane squared off against Big Daddy V and Mark Henry. As to be expected, V and Henry put the squash on, with BDV pinning Punk.

Afterthought: Lame. Punk didn't belong in this "feud" to begin with. ECW in itself is really an afterthought. I can't even tell you the last time I watched it. Which channel is Sci-Fi?

The third match of the night had all the makings to be an instant classic, and really in my opinion should have been saved for closer to Wrestlemania - because it featured my two favorite RAW superstars, Mr. Kennedy and Shawn Michaels going one on one. Unfortunately for Mr. K, Shaw Michaels never fails to impress, as he landed some SCM for the win.

Afterthought: Definitely an instant classic. Too bad it was on an Armageddon.

Match four was for a WWE title shot at the Royal Rumble, and it saw former allies Triple H and Jeff Hardy squaring off. Surprising to me and everyone else, Jeff Hardy pulled out the win, with a quick flip over pin. WWE.com states that HHH isn't to happy, and could be looking for revenge tonight.

Afterthought: I don't expect to see Jeff Hardy facing anyone for the WWE Championship at the Rumble. I Do expect to see Triple H somehow win that shot away from him. Who knows where this one is going?

Up next was The Great Khali versus Finlay, and in Fin's corner - Hornswoggle! Believe it or not, after a lowblow from Hornswoggle, Finlay nails Khali with a second shillelagh and gets the pin!

Afterthough: Whaaaaaa. This was a take a piss match.

Next, Chris Jericho finally returned, and in doing so he claimed a shot at Randy Orton's WWE title. He didn't win a shot, he just came back and said he was taking one. I guess that's good enough? Anyways, just when it looked like Jericho had the match in the bag, with Orton locked in the Walls of Jericho, JBL came out of nowhere and delivered a vicious kick right to the side of Jericho's head! The referee calls for the bell and Jericho is awarded the DQ victory, but what the hell?

Afterthought: WHAT THE FUCK?! Where did JBL come from, and WHY?! Rumors are he attacks Jericho again on the Christmas in Iraq special, which airs on Christmas Eve. Man oh man, now there's a feud I wouldn't mind seeing. Guess Jericho is going to Smackdown? They need him!

Women's title match. Who gives a shit. The big blonde bitch beats the lesbian bitch, retains her title.

Afterthought: Mickie James has massive labia.

MAINEVENT: Triple Threat match for the World Heavyweight Title. Edge vs Undertaker vs Batista. In the second big "shocker" of the night, Edge came away with his second World Title win, after using two DECOY EDGES (the Major Brothers) to distract Undertaker and Batista! Surprising, I know.

Afterthought: Holy Shit Three Edges?! I guess it's better than Batista as champ - cuz he sucks.

Well that's it, another WWE pay per view in the bag. Almost time for the Road to Wrestlemania to begin, and you can expect all the late-breaking news leading up to the big night right here at Ultra Wrestling Roundup!

Smackdown Spoilers - 11/14/2007

The show opened with Finlay against Jeff Hardy in a non-title match. A solid match that lasted a little under 10 minutes, I think, before Finlay was DQ’d for grabbing the shillelagh and trying to use it. Jeff ducked it, though, and grabbed it away from him. Finlay ran for cover.

An in-ring promo from the Undertaker was next. He got an amazing reaction. What he said was pretty short and sweet, that the "devil’s playground" of Hell in the Cell should be known as the Deadman’s playground and that Batista would rest in peace. Clips of Taker brutalizing people in Cell matches (HBK, Foley, Rikishi) aired throughout the show.

Next up was a diva’s tag match with Torrie Wilson and Mickie James against Beth Phoenix and Victoria. Beth pinned Torrie after that double wing into a slam move that she used on Maria Monday night.

A short backstage segment with the Hardys aired where Jeff told Matt that he had plans and had to go. Matt watched him leave and repeated the word "plans" like he found it funny.

It was then time for the VIP Lounge with guest Matt Hardy. They discussed their match on ECW, with Matt accusing MVP of taking advantage of Jeff when Kennedy yanked him to the floor, and MVP pointing out that he saved Matt from Kennedy afterwards. Matt pointed out that MVP hadn’t defended the United States title in a while, and more specifically he hadn’t defended it against Matt. So he suggested having a title match right then and there.

MVP said it was bad enough they had to be on opposite sides at Survivor Series, he didn’t want to wrestle Matt for the US Title, too. He said the two of them were friends now and shouldn’t be fighting. Matt finally told MVP off, saying they aren’t friends, they’d never be friends, and that he wanted his title shot.

MVP said it couldn’t happen because he’d arranged a tag title defense, and asked that the ring be cleared out and for their opponents to come down. John Morrison’s music hit and he made his entrance, then The Miz did likewise. Early on in the match, MVP grabbed at his leg like he’d pulled something and tagged in Matt. The story of the match became that Matt severely injured his knee, and Morrison and Miz kept working on it until Matt could barely stand. He was never able to tag MVP and ended up getting pinned to lose the titles.

MVP grabbed the microphone and, while making some boy-band jokes at the new champs, demanded to have his contractually obligated rematch for the tag titles right then. Morrison and Miz returned to the ring and a second match began.

MVP started the second match, but after about a minute he grabbed at his leg again and tagged Matt back in. Matt could hardly stand and was basically defenseless, ultimately giving up in a submission hold.

After the match, MVP helped Matt to his feet only to turn on him by kicking the injured leg. A pretty lengthy attack on Matt’s knee followed, with MVP taking the time to remove Matt’s boot and his leg brace and doing damage to the knee. He then bent Matt’s knee around the ring post a few times. Then he put the big metal stairs in the ring, picked Matt up, and dropped him on his knee on the stairs. MVP left to the biggest heat of the night and referees and officials came out to help Matt hobble to the back.

The next match was Mr. Kennedy against Rey Mysterio. It went about 15 minutes and was a very good match, I thought, though I’ll admit the fans (who were super hot for Rey) might have made it seem better than it was. I’d say Undertaker’s reaction was bigger, but the entire crowd was living and dying with Rey’s every move. The finish came when Kennedy got Rey up for the Green Bay Plunge and Rey countered it into a top rope hurricanrana.

Next up was the boxing style weigh-in between the Great Khali and Hornswoggle, hosted by Michael Cole. Not much of note happened: they both stood on the oversized scale, with Cole reading Hornswoggle’s weight in the 100's and then claiming the scale broke when Khali got on it. Then they stood next to each other to show off the size difference. Hornswoggle wept throughout the segment.

The main event came next, a no DQ match between Batista and Mark Henry. It couldn’t have gone longer than 2 or 3 minutes and was pretty much all Batista. He went outside and got the title belt, smashed it into Henry’s head, and got the pin. Afterwards he destroyed Henry outside the ring, smashing him across the back several times with a chair and then spearing him on the floor.

When Batista got back in the ring, Undertaker’s music played. The video screens showed a close up of Taker’s eyes, which he rolled back into his head. That’s where Smackdown ends.

Afterwards, JBL ran away from ringside and Batista posed and slapped hands to close the show.

Rumor then has it, that JBL went to the back and a fight ensued.

Source: PWInsider

A fight broke out backstage last night in Wichita, Kansas after SmackDown! was taped. After teh show was over, JBL gathered a number of WWE superstars together, including John Morrison, The Miz, MVP, CM Punk, and Matt Hardy.

JBL berated Miz and Morrison for their color commentary work on ECW. JBL was furious that the two made Punk look bad with their commentary. They were heels and were supposed to criticize Punk in a heel way, but JBL felt they went too far with it. JBL then yelled at them for their ring work during their match with MVP & Matt Hardy. JBL told Miz & Morrizon to apologize to Punk, MVP & Hardy for making all 3 of them look bad.

The Miz apologized, but Morrison told JBL “F*** you, it's none of your business”. He then said he would appoligize to Punk, Hardy & MVP, but not because JBL told him to.

The confronation went back and forth until Morrison shoved JBL. Several agents broke up the dispute before it got further than a shove.

World Heavyweight Title Match @ Cyber Sunday Announced

Following the airing of last night’s edition of SmackDown, WWE has announced Batista vs. Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Championship at their upcoming Cyber Sunday pay-per-view. The fans will be able to choose the special referee as choices include Mick Foley, Steve Austin, and JBL. The match was originally scheduled to be a Fatal Four Way match with various combinations of Undertaker, Great Khali, Mark Henry, Finlay, and Rey Mysterio challenging Batista for the title, however, WWE opted to go with the singles match.

This match is going to be a tough one to call, but I have a feeling that this match is going to end in a DQ or Countout finish. I really dont see one one going over on this night.

WWE: No Mercy tonight on Pay Per View

No Mercy is tonight and fans are still kept in the dark about what the main event is going to be. All we know is that there will be a new WWE Heavyweight Champion.

Last Minute Decision

There's a reason why WWE has yet to reveal what the main event WWE Heavyweight Championship match for tonight's No Mercy pay per view is; they don't know yet. This will be a last minute decision.

Usually, it's pretty foolish to have a pay per view without an announced main event, but the Chris Jericho hype will get people to shell out money in hopes that he does make his much anticipated return tonight.

Chris Jericho vs Randy Orton

While the majority of wrestling fans have already accepted it as a fact, Chris Jericho still is not officially with WWE. A signing that big wouldn't be kept a secret. It'd be virtually impossible to keep it a secret.

This is not a dream match by any means, but it would get people interested in wrestling again. Chris Jericho is that damn popular.

There's a dilemma with putting the WWE Heavyweight Championship on Chris Jericho.

It goes against WWE's way of doing business. It's rare to see a fresh face being handed the belt immediately. Carlito and Santino Marella were two guys that were able to pull off the feat, but those were the WWE United States Heavyweight Championship and the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

Umaga vs Triple H vs Randy Orton

This is the most likely match to happen tonight at No Mercy.

Triple H and Umaga are already engaged in a feud. They're basically the second highest feud on the Raw brand, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to bump these two into the main event scene. They have enough credibility.

Plus, WWE can continue to push Randy Orton's character as being a guy who is willing to do anything to get his hands on the title by having Umaga and Vince McMahon help screw Triple H out of the title.

Randy Orton vs Undertaker

This is a very real possibility, especially when you consider how odd it is that Undertaker isn't currently involved in a feud or a match at No Mercy.

Sure, the annoucement was made that Undertaker and Kane are scheduled for a tag team title match against Matt Hardy and MVP at next week's episode of Smackdown, but that could simply be a swerve to throw fans off. There's really no reason why that match isn't booked for No Mercy right now.

It makes a lot of sense to put Undertaker on Monday Night Raw right now as the WWE Heavyweight Champion. There's a lack of main event faces on the show right now because Shawn Michaels, John Cena, and Bobby Lashley are injured. Plus, there's already a handful of heels (Mr Kennedy, Snitsky, Randy Orton, Umaga, and potentially King Booker if he comes back) for Undertaker to face.

Closing Thoughts

Oddly enough, John Cena's injury has inadvertently caused No Mercy to generate a lot more interest than it normally would.

WWE: Ric Flair says he's still an employee, never left, and wants to retire in a year!

The following article appeared in the Long Island Press:

Ric Flair didn't say he's back with World Wrestling Entertainment.

According to the 16-time World Heavyweight Champion, he never left.

On Saturday, Flair was at Dover International Speedway as a guest of Roadloans.com, the title sponsor for the day's NASCAR Busch Series race.

During a press conference, Flair announced that he is working a limited schedule with WWE, and never gave notice that he was leaving the company.

"Those reports were totally incorrect," said Flair.

But curiously, the press release from the track that preceded Flair's appearances described him as "currently retired" from the wrestling business.

Flair spoke in glowing terms about WWE, noting that Chairman Vince McMahon could run NASCAR if he had a month to get up to speed. Those comments stand in stark contrast to Internet rumors that he was leaving the company due to dissatisfaction with the storylines he's been offered.

Flair did say that he plans to retire from wrestling within the next year, as he wants to spend more time with his family, including playing with his kids.

"I have a new, beautiful young wife. She's very rewarding. I like playing with her, too," Flair said of wife Tiffany, who was sitting 20 feet away. Flair's quip was one of many that had the media in stitches.

Fans hope Flair's WWE work can be similarly entertaining as he winds up his career. But Flair added that he has been given no assurances about creative direction.

"They don't do that," Flair said of WWE. "And I wouldn't expect them to. I've earned the right to retire on my own terms, but I don't see myself as bigger than the WWE. If it works into a storyline that works with the program, then I'm happy with it. If not, we just walk away one day and say goodbye."

That said, Flair has an idea of how he would like things to go.

"If I could write that script, I would just say that I would be in a marquee position...I would like to wrestle a marquee guy, a big name, in my last match," Flair said. "Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, John Cena...I would love to wrestle in a marquee position in a marquee match and just have my finest hour."
