Is Ryback the Change WWE Needs?

Ryback WWE ChampionSome online "experts" may say he's green, clumsy, a Goldberg clone, etc., but one thing is for sure, Ryback has exploded on to the scene and has made an impact unlike any superstar in years.  I remember reading house show reports from his first few appearances and not understanding what the former "Skip Sheffield's" new character was.  "Ryback" sounded like some sort of robotic monster similar to John Cena's "Prototype" character from his early years.  In reality, Ryback has just turned out to be an ass kicker that plows his opponents and doesn't have much to say....very similar to Goldberg's rise to stardom in the 90's which has played a big part in the "Goldberg" chants that are still heard during Ryback's matches.

The build for the Ryback character has been great, he's destroyed everyone in his path, and even multiple opponents at once.  We knew the moment would come that Ryback would be matched against higher level opponents, but it seems WWE's lack of ratings has sped up the process and now Ryback finds himself in the main event picture.  For the past few weeks, Ryback has made his presence known to WWE Champion CM Punk, and now we may even see that match on pay per view after the events on RAW last Monday.

While it may seem rushed, I pose the question, is Ryback main eventing exactly what WWE needs?  Ryback is a character that is an anti-John Cena....no goofy jokes, no being the good guy in any situation, just straight up ass kicking.  The fact of the matter is, Ryback is a guy that adult males aren't afraid to cheer for.  He gets in the ring and destroys opponents, and in brutal fashion.  John Cena has driven these fans away with his antics, and these fans need someone to cheer for if WWE wants to bring them back.

Another fact is that Ryback brings back a sense of realism to the WWE Title scene, he's a guy even non fans would stop and watch because they want to see the big "freakishly huge monster" in the ring and see what he can do.  In a visual side by side comparison, Ryback SHOULD beat Punk.  Seeing him defeat Punk wouldn't feel out of place to a casual fan, Ryback looks like someone who physically should be the champion and would plow most opponents.  The bigger question is, can WWE keep the Goldberg-esque mystique with Ryback by keeping him undefeated for a good long while, unlike Goldberg who was infamously sabotaged in WCW.

Is Ryback ready? Time will tell.  But I have a feeling Ryback would be a champion that would have casual fans drawn in just to see who could possibly beat him.  Is there that type of mystique with Cena or any other top guy?  Not at all, we've seen them matched up in every way and interest just isn't there.  So what do you think?  Would Ryback as WWE Champion spark interest or fall flat? Is now the time or should Ryback continue moving up the roster at a slow pace before reaching WWE Title level?

A REAL Backstage Story About Working with The Straight Edge Jack@$$

Yeah, he may be the hottest trending name in pro wrestling as we speak, but it doesn’t change the bad taste he left when we worked with him.

CM Punk – or should I pull a Vinnie Mac and just refer to him as “Phil” – is a very talented and gifted athlete. He’s one of the best I’ve seen on the mic in a while. Unfortunately, his over sized ego casts an enormous shadow over his skills and paints him as an old school, red rubber, hanging your grandmothers shower, vinegar smelling, DOUCHEBAG!

Now out of respect for Pro Wrestling Roundup and its visitors, I won’t go into detail on this website because I wouldn’t want to them to be associated with my personal feelings spawned by my personal experience with Phil. BUT, if you want to hear a story about what it was like working with Phil right before he signed with the WWE, then please click the link below to follow the full story.

I would also welcome all your comments and opinions about Phillip Punk. I know many of you may be a fan of his work, as well am I. But I’m not talking about his character, I’m talking about him in real life. Mr. Phil Brooks! So if you were ever told to "f" off when asking for an autograph in an airport or a hotel, I’d love to hear about it!

In the meantime, enjoy the read!

DVD Review: "Hard Knocks" Wrestling Documentary

"Hard Knocks" is a new DVD that documents various aspect of the independent wrestling scene in England.  What's nice for American fans is that many American stars are featured as they work for the promotions in England.  Featured stars are Al Snow, Mick Foley, CM Punk, Raven, D'Lo Brown, Hardcore Holly, BG James, Billy Gunn, and more.  The documentary portion of the DVD shows behind the scenes clips and interviews from various shows, and also hopeful wrestlers training and showing the difficulties of wrestling school.  While the documentary portion is rather short, the extras on the DVD make up for it with lengthy shoot style interviews with Bob "Hardcore" Holly, BG James, Al Snow, and more.

Also the extras feature highlights from various shows, and some outtakes such as some hilarious clips of very new wrestling school students who are rather lost in what to do.  I haven't had the chance to see much from the English Indy scene, so this DVD was interesting to watch, and I did notice some of the shows had some great crowds that were very into the show which gave the shows a big time feel.  The DVD should be especially interesting to anyone that is aspiring to be a wrestler, as the documentary is very real and holds nothing back as far as how hard it is to make it in the business.  Also the veterans give tips on what it takes to make it in wrestling, which is valuable information coming from guys that have been there and done that.

The film has been nominated at various film festivals, and it is now available for purchase.  Check out the Hard Knocks trailer below, and below that you can purchase your own copy.

Breaking News: CM Punk Has Won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

In a shocking turn of events, WWE actually did something unpredictable, and kicked off RAW with a long segment involving Jim Ross's farewell speech, which was interrupted by Edge and his Edgeheads....which lead to a heated promo by Edge, saying he'd never appear on RAW again, which brought out Batista, who destroyed Edge, kicked his ass all over the arena, which was topped off by CM Punk cashing in his money in the bank, and defeating Edge for the World Heavyweight Title. Talk about fresh, a guy who just got drafted to RAW, and who hasn't been giving a huge main event push yet, walks in and wins the World Title. Like him or not (I'm not the biggest CM fan,) this was great booking, something exciting and unexpected, and a guy winning the title who you wouldn't expect. Finally WWE does something right, shakes things up, and gets us out of the boring John Cena-Triple H-Randy Orton title picture that's been boring for ages now! Let he era of CM Punk begin!

WWE Armageddon: Afterthoughts

Last night, WWE Armageddon went down live from Pittsburgh, PA (where earlier in the day my Jaguars stomped all over the Steelers), and the night saw several impressive performances, and even a couple shockers.

The first match of the night would see MVP facing off against Rey Mysterio with the US title on the line. MVP would manage to squeak by, losing by way of count out, but keeping his title in the process.

Afterthought: Where do they go from here? MVP is established as a tweener, but this is his latest in many lackluster feuds. It's time to get the US strap off of him, and get him involved in something mainevent status. I think he could pull it off.

Match numero dos came to use from the ECW front, as CM Punk and Kane squared off against Big Daddy V and Mark Henry. As to be expected, V and Henry put the squash on, with BDV pinning Punk.

Afterthought: Lame. Punk didn't belong in this "feud" to begin with. ECW in itself is really an afterthought. I can't even tell you the last time I watched it. Which channel is Sci-Fi?

The third match of the night had all the makings to be an instant classic, and really in my opinion should have been saved for closer to Wrestlemania - because it featured my two favorite RAW superstars, Mr. Kennedy and Shawn Michaels going one on one. Unfortunately for Mr. K, Shaw Michaels never fails to impress, as he landed some SCM for the win.

Afterthought: Definitely an instant classic. Too bad it was on an Armageddon.

Match four was for a WWE title shot at the Royal Rumble, and it saw former allies Triple H and Jeff Hardy squaring off. Surprising to me and everyone else, Jeff Hardy pulled out the win, with a quick flip over pin. WWE.com states that HHH isn't to happy, and could be looking for revenge tonight.

Afterthought: I don't expect to see Jeff Hardy facing anyone for the WWE Championship at the Rumble. I Do expect to see Triple H somehow win that shot away from him. Who knows where this one is going?

Up next was The Great Khali versus Finlay, and in Fin's corner - Hornswoggle! Believe it or not, after a lowblow from Hornswoggle, Finlay nails Khali with a second shillelagh and gets the pin!

Afterthough: Whaaaaaa. This was a take a piss match.

Next, Chris Jericho finally returned, and in doing so he claimed a shot at Randy Orton's WWE title. He didn't win a shot, he just came back and said he was taking one. I guess that's good enough? Anyways, just when it looked like Jericho had the match in the bag, with Orton locked in the Walls of Jericho, JBL came out of nowhere and delivered a vicious kick right to the side of Jericho's head! The referee calls for the bell and Jericho is awarded the DQ victory, but what the hell?

Afterthought: WHAT THE FUCK?! Where did JBL come from, and WHY?! Rumors are he attacks Jericho again on the Christmas in Iraq special, which airs on Christmas Eve. Man oh man, now there's a feud I wouldn't mind seeing. Guess Jericho is going to Smackdown? They need him!

Women's title match. Who gives a shit. The big blonde bitch beats the lesbian bitch, retains her title.

Afterthought: Mickie James has massive labia.

MAINEVENT: Triple Threat match for the World Heavyweight Title. Edge vs Undertaker vs Batista. In the second big "shocker" of the night, Edge came away with his second World Title win, after using two DECOY EDGES (the Major Brothers) to distract Undertaker and Batista! Surprising, I know.

Afterthought: Holy Shit Three Edges?! I guess it's better than Batista as champ - cuz he sucks.

Well that's it, another WWE pay per view in the bag. Almost time for the Road to Wrestlemania to begin, and you can expect all the late-breaking news leading up to the big night right here at Ultra Wrestling Roundup!

ECW Title Match @ Cyber Sunday Announced

World Wrestling Entertainment has announced another match for this month’s WWE Cyber Sunday PPV. CM Punk will be defending his ECW Championship against the fans choice of Big Daddy V or The Miz or John Morrison.

Its pretty much a 100% guarantee that John Morrison will be facing CM Punk and will be walking away with the ECW Title. CM Punk was just supposed to be a place holder until John Morrison got back from suspension and with the ECW ratings not getting any better, you can bet Vince is blaming CM Punk for that, and not the shitty storylines he allows on ECW programming.
